Michael Sam Cut From Rams, First Openly Gay NFL Draftee May Still Get Chance to Join a Team

Defensive end Michael Sam was cut from the St. Louis Rams on Saturday. The first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team almost made the cut, but the Rams' depth on the defensive line made it hard to justify keeping him on the final roster. He could still sign with another team, though, or join the Rams' practice squad.

Sam showed his gratitude via Twitter after getting the disappointing news that he was cut from the Rams' roster this weekend (via NBC News):

"I want to thank the entire Rams organization and the city of St. Louis for giving me this tremendous opportunity."

Coach Jeff Fisher had nothing but praise for Sam, saying the decision, though tough, was a purely football decision (via ESPN):

"There's no challenge with respect to Mike Sam. He's not about drawing attention to himself. He kept his head down and worked and you can't ask anything more out of any player for that matter."

Even though he didn't make the cut, there might still be a spot somewhere for the very talented Sam.

Good luck, Mike.
