Respected teammate. Good character. Trustworthy. Until last week, those terms all seemed to apply to USC Trojans defender Josh Shaw. The same day that the fifth-year senior was made captain, he sprained both his ankles. Though he told his team he had jumped from a balcony in order to save his drowning nephew, it was later revealed that not only was he lying, cops were looking for him on suspicion of a domestic dispute. Now that his lies have been exposed, his standing with the Trojans is in jeopardy.
Shaw's coach, Steve Sarkisian, told the press what a surprise the news was (via ABC News):
"We are extremely disappointed in Josh. He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story."
The general feeling seems to be that his actions seem to be totally out of character (via Newsweek):
"With anyone else you might be a little more skeptical. But of the 105 [football] players, if you line them up, Josh Shaw's carrying the flag. I mean, this is an exemplary guy. This is your out-front guy."
