Tony Stewart Returns To Racing After NASCAR Driver/Owner Kills Kevin Ward: Investigation of Tragic Death Continues

A somber Tony Stewart made a public statement yesterday, his first appearance since killing fellow driver Kevin Ward about three weeks ago. Ward exited his vehicle during a dirt track race, apparently angry with Stewart for trading paint with him. He walked out in front of several cars and, tragically, Stewart hit him with his car. While Stewart seems incredibly broken up about it, police continue to investigate the tragic death to determine whether he is guilty of a crime or not. Meanwhile, the NASCAR driver/owner will be making his return to racing this afternoon after taking a sabbatical out of respect for the Ward family.

At an emotionally charged press conference, Stewart spoke about his pain and his hopes to move on (via CBS Sports):

"I've taken the last couple of weeks off out of respect for Kevin and his family and also to cope with the accident in my own way. It's given me the time to think about life and how easy it is to take it for granted."

Even if he isn't charged, the guilt and horror of the incident will likely stay with Stewart forever (via New York Times):

"This has been one of the toughest tragedies I've ever had to deal with, both professionally and personally. This is something that will affect my life forever. This is a sadness and pain I hope no one ever has to experience in their life."
