HBO’s new series The Leftovers is starting to slip after a stellar eight episode run. Last week’s episode, titled“The Garveys at Their Best,” was by far the worst of the series. The show’s full hour last week was spent during the days leading up the rapture. However, it was the episode’s predictable ending, bizarre deer subplot and overuse of dramatic irony that lead this viewer to pray for a real life rapture. Now, in celebration of the Labor Day holiday, (You know that day off of school, that always falls right after school starts back) the show is taking another lull in action. Taking Labor Day weekend off is the standard for a lot of show’s, because many viewers are on vacation during and away from their TV’s. However, the practice seems a little outdated in the age of DVR’s and On Demand. One would think that people would be more likely to tune into a 10:00 p.m Sunday night drama, when they don’t have to wake up early for work the next morning. Still the show’s hiatus stands, leaving us waiting for the Season 1 finale of the recently renewed series.
Just when we were starting to have high hopes for HBO’s The Leftovers, they went and ruined it with last week’s snooze fest. The overly boring, pre-rapture episode, made waste the previous week’s epic episode. Aside from the few tiny tidbits we learned about the characters lives, the episode was full enough dramatic irony to make you sick. Nora lost her whole family, but when she had them she was anxious for a life without them. Kevin who is desperately trying to save dogs/ his old life with Laurie, didn’t want dogs pre departure. We Get It! He wants his wife back. We Get It! The deer is a metaphor for his failing marriage. All of this wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t for the highly telegraphed ending. Who didn’t see every part of that ending coming?
The previous episode was a tough act to follow. After killing the momentum built up in episode eight, we now to wait another week for the season finale. Lets hope the show gets back on the right track next week. If not, there is always one more season of Boardwalk Empire.
