RGIII (known to his mother as Robert Griffin III) spent Thursday night as a spectator in the Washington Redskins' win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Skins beat the Bucs 24-10, but action groups are still waging war against the NFL club, saying they should change their racist mascot which is offensive to many Native Americans. As the name controversy still rages, one group is urging other NFL teams to advocate name change.
Giving much of the game over to the subs, the Buccaneers tried to spotlight running back Jeff Demps. It wasn't enough, though (via The Ledger):
"'We tried to give Jeff as many opportunities as possible,' said Bucs coach Lovie Smith. 'He's the fastest guy in the NFL and you want him to show that speed. We just really weren't able to break him.'"
Meanwhile, a group called The National Coalition Against Racism in Sports and Media reached out to the Minnesota Vikings and the University of Minnesota, urging them to denounce the Washington team's name (via ABC News Local KSTP):
"It's a battle that's been brewing for years. The group calls the name racist and argues the contract between the Vikings and the U of M prohibits discrimination."
