South Carolina Gamecocks Disappointing Loss to Texas A&M Breaks Steve Spurrier's Nearly Undefeated Hope Open Record and 18-Game Williams Brice Winning Streak
All the announcers could talk about during the first half was Johnny Manziel, but sophomore sensation Kenny Hill shut them up pretty quick during Texas A&M's decisive victory over the Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina. The number 9 ranked USC team's disappointing loss in their home opener was devastating for two reasons; the Aggies managed to break South Carolina's 18-game winning streak at Williams Brice and tarnish coach Steve Spurrier's impeccable home opener record. Until Thursday night he had only ever lost one home opener- at Duke in 1989!
Though it was a tough loss for the Gamecocks, the new SEC Network is expecting big things in its inaugural season (via Greenville Online):
"This is an event. Game day in the SEC is an event. The tradition, the pageantry, the tailgating, the energy, the fans - we're going to put a good mirror up to that and reflect that to the rest of the country, and I think everybody is going to be blown away."
There are a couple of things to remember for USC fans. First, Texas A&M is a strong ball club with a rookie quarterback who was hungry to prove he could fill Johnny Football's shoes. Secondly, the Gamecocks lost a lot of defensive starters last year, but they are confident the new D-Squad will improve quickly (via GO Gamecocks):
"Lou Holtz always said a team's biggest improvement came between Games 1-2, and a feeble hope is that USC's defense can only improve after Thursday's fiasco. It really can't get any worse - right?"
