Back in 2010 there was a big Twitter push to have Community star Donald Glover play the new Spider-Man. This was a great, but their was only problem is that Glover is an African American, and movie-goers aren’t the most progressive group. However, Glover’s campaign did help inspire to create an all new Spider-man for the Ultimate Universe. Miles Morales, a half-black, half-latino teen replaced a dead Peter Parker in the alternative reality comic. Now Glover has gotten his chance to play Spider-Man, in the Disney XD Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors. Glover will guest star in an upcoming episode as Miles Morales, alongside Drake Bell as Peter Parker.
Stephen Wacker, vice president of Marvel Television's animation division, recently spoke top USA Today about casting Glover as Milies:
"He meets someone who is his hero, and that comes across completely in Donald's performance. He's got a real warmth that suits the character really, really well. If you've read Miles Morales comics, Donald's voice nails what you've been reading."
Donald Glover also spoke up about getting to play one of his favorite heroes:
"I never liked Superman that much, because I was like, 'Yo, this dude can't die. It's too easy. Batman is pretty fly. He's a close second, just because he doesn't really have powers. He's just a justice-driven vigilante. Spider-Man is the best because you just don't know who he is, and he's funny and he's poor. I understand Spider-Man a lot on that level. He's just trying to make it."
However, Glover isn’t giving up on his dream to play a live-action Spider-Man, adding:
"I still have hopes to do something like that one day.I don't look at this as second place. Spider-Man, he's such an icon --you have to do something with him."
Meanwhile, The Flash TV series (and the New 52 to a more disappointing degree) has opened the door for a black Wally West to appear sometime in the future. For our money, no one would be better for the role as The (3rd) Flash, like Donald Glover.
