Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is expected to start their September 7 opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, it's not clear how effective he will be with a tender ankle and a brand new hairline fracture in his ribs. The injured quarterback is known to be tough, but will he be able to lead his team in his current state. This development may affect his fantasy football standings as well. Who wants a player with broken ribs?
For better or worse, Cam Newton is the chosen one in Charlotte. He may not be 100%, but if he can walk, expect Newton to helm the Panthers offense (via Charlotte Observer):
"I think he will start against Tampa Bay. If you haven't noticed, underneath the smile and the showmanship is an extremely tough guy."
Fantasy footballers ought not expect too much from Newton, at least not in the early stages of this season. There's a chance he will make a full recovery, but not with his aggressive style (via SB Nation):
"The Panthers sound as uncertain about Newton as we do, so this looks like it will be a day-to-day situation. Look for Derek Anderson to play most of the preseason finale on Thursday."
