Super sports agent Scott Boras recently said that Tom Cruise's character Jerry McGuire was a crappy agent. According to him, it's all about keeping the relationship professional, not being buddies with your clients. The reason he hates the movie is that he felt it wasn't realistic. And Boras knows. He's considered one of the top agents in the game. He's not heartless, though. If you ask him about the controversial Washington Redskins' mascot, he will tell you that the groups who are offended by the racist name should have a say in the matter.
When recently asked about Jerry McGuire, the hugely popular movie in which Tom Cruise portrayed a sports agent, Scott Boras said it was a load of baloney. In fact, he would probably argue that McGuire at the beginning of the movie was a better agent than he was at the end (via TMZ):
"The best thing you can do for a player probably is to handle that a little bit differently ... make sure he's more about decision making and what he needs to do and more about his relationship with his loved ones and your relationship is probably more of a professional one."
But lest you think he's all business, Boras does have very strong feelings regarding the Washington Redskins name. Being part Native American, Boras says owner Dan Snyder shouldn't be allowed to continue to use the offensive name (via Washington Post):
"I believe that decision belongs to the very tribes and such, so that they themselves can determine what is best for their children, their families, their respect, and I think that only they are the ones that really know the meaning and the definition, whether they are pro or con, of whether those names should be used or not used. I would leave that decision to the Indian Nation."
