A recent update by Chicago's Joffrey Ballet has startled audiences--as the ballet plans on livestreaming a day-long rehearsal of Swan Lake between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 21. This, for some reason, has confounded most ballet goers.
The production, though, will open its doors to the public on October 15.
Maybe they haven't caught wind that this is actually what we do now, or perhaps they're terrified at the "Reality TV" implications of premiering in real-time a behnd-the-scenes vantage point for anyone who wants to watch.
Aristic Director Ashley Wheater said to CBS Chicago:
We just thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for people that really support the Joffrey, but, also for people that maybe just are really interested in what is that creative process and what is the rehearsal process that goes into putting a work on the stage.
What's interesting about this is the firsthand look that so many enthusiasts and aspiring performers will be granted, it's like a window into another dimension. This provides an exciting and almost interactive experience for viewers of all-ages and may be more entertaining than the actual performance (as far as Reality Shows go, and this being a mild off-shoot of that).
But the never-been-done exclusive should harness a strong viewership and help promote the $1.5 million production of Wheeldon's conceptualized Swan Lake.
In the meantime, get brushed up on some other Joffrey action courtesy of Oprah herself.
