American Soccer Goalie Hope Solo is being mocked via social media after US Soccer decided to promote her after her arrest for domestic assault. Solo is about to break the record for most shutouts by a goalie, but all people can talk about is how she allegedly beat up her sister and her 17 year-old nephew.
Solo is under fire for her recent alleged attack of family members during a birthday party. She will go to trial in November but the public is already putting her on trial via social media.
Is it the public's right to assume Solo's guilt while she is legally free to continue to play soccer? Or is it wise that she is still playing? Some people may feel it unwise to allow her to represent America while being charged with violent crimes (via Huffington Post):
"She is currently playing with the U.S. National team while awaiting her trial in November but the public through social media isn't letting her forget and the incident is now overshadowing her historic achievements on the field."
For now, it looks like US Soccer is concentrating on the on-the-field aspect of Solo's life. But she probably won't be appearing on any Wheaties boxes anytime soon (via USA Today):
"'We are aware that Hope is handling a personal situation at the moment,' said Neil Buethe, U.S. Soccer director of communications. 'At the same time, she has an opportunity to set a significant record that speaks to her hard work and dedication over the years with the National Team. While considering all factors involved, we believe that we should recognize that in the proper way.'"
While many sports bodies are concerned with public relations and athletes being role models, US Soccer seems content to let it ride for now.
