MIT's Tod Machover Takes Over Lucerne Festival for 10-Day Residency; 'Symphony for Lucerne' Doc to Commissioned, Too

Inventor and MIT Media Lab Professor, Tod Machover, has been named Lucerne Festival's 2015 Composer in Residence. The event should come as a much anticipated series for the festival...considering his analysis on baseball.

He has done it for the cities of Perth, Edinburgh and Toronto, and this time Machover will compose a collaborative symphony for the city of Lucerne. The aim is to try and capture the city's life, spirit and rich culture in music.

The residency will begin August 20 and will reign for ten days, exploring the energy and sonic nature of the city, gathering musical ideas submitted by the residents of Lucerne.

A press release states:

...The process of creating this collaborative symphony for Lucerne is in its earliest stage, Machover is capturing some of Lucerne's most unique characteristics through sound. He explains Lucerne as "a kind of oasis, a quiet, almost-perfect city where the most delicate sounds - water lapping on the lakeshore, footsteps reverberating in covered wooden bridges, birds whispering rather than shouting, music from orchestras, traveling choirs, buskers and boom boxes all intertwining - are unburdened by traffic or crowd noise, creating a kind of idealized chamber music.

And as an added bonus to the forthcoming residency, Machover has been commissioned by the festival to host an additional few projects and compositions that will be announced soon. Also, there will be a film created as a behind-the-scenes doc entitled Symphony for Lucerne, a work also commissioned by the festival.

There will be an app created in accordance with the film and the computer software Hyperscore will be a part of the festival--a program that allowes young people to compose their own musical portraits of the city which will be translated into a symphony.

So don't miss the much-anticipated festival and make sure that Machover makes your doodles the next symphony for the ages.
