SummerSlam had more hard knocks than an After School Special tonight. In the second title change of the night, Paige reclaimed the Divas Title after defeating CM Punk's Wife, AJ Lee. A successful climax to their potentially dreadful "frienemy" storyline, Paige has proven herself an incredible heel. The tension between these two is radioactive. As the new Divas champion sets out to defend her title against the rest of the horde, will AJ take another sabbatical to reflect on her upset loss to the Pale Wonder?
AJ's successful title defense against Paige at last month's Battleground was a good match, but their feud was still in its infancy. Now, the two have a solid history that will pay off for years to come. Even if Paige turns face again, or if (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) AJ were to turn heel, the two have obviously shown that they can work well as a tag team, and it would be just as compelling as their feud. It looks like these two are stuck together for a while.
An interesting note in tonight's match was the finish. Paige has an excellent submission finish, but Creative chose to give her a victory by pinfall in the center of the ring. Instead of the PTO, Paige won with the oft-neglected "Ram-Paige", a devastating scoop DDT. Could this replace the Paige Turner as her finisher of choice?
It may go without saying, but it won't in this column. The Divas division is strong, and by all accounts, the NXT roster is even stronger. Why then, is a superior match-up like AJ vs. Paige given so little time? It's probably because WWE, and sadly, most of the WWE Universe, still don't take women's wrestling seriously. It's a sin and a shame, but it won't likely be changing any time soon.
