SummerSlam is less than three hours away. The main event will see WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena defend his title against the Beast, Brock Lesnar. While Cena has shown a great deal of passion as of late, it will take a lot more than a few hot promos to get over on Brock Lesnar. It feels like the title will change hands tonight, but not without a fight. Paul Heyman has single-handedly hyped this match up to epic proportions. Even in Lesnar's absence, Heyman has maintained momentum from his shocking victory over Undertaker at Wrestlemania. No matter who wins at the end of the night, it's gonna be a knock-down, drag-out fight. I think Lesnar's walking out with the belt, but one prediction I can safely make is this: somebody's getting hurt tonight.
John Cena has sort of been reborn since the SummerSlam match was set. His laid-back persona is poisonous. He is much better when showing his emotions instead of cracking jokes or (God help us), rapping. The thing that he needs to realize is that he's not cool. But that's okay. Cena could be much more acceptable to smarks if he just worked hard and did his job. Let the Miz and Fandango do the nonchalant promos.
As far as Brock Lesnar goes, he can carry the belt with sparse appearances and limited title defenses. A hands off champion will only add to the mystique of both the wrestler and the title. Plus, with Paul Heyman in his corner, Lesnar's current run will be just as effective as his previous ones. With Heyman, WWE can reclaim some of the edge they've lost during the family era without selling sex or blood. He has a great wrestling mind and he knows how to excite audiences with psychology without relying on cheap thrills.
If you don't yet have the WWE Network, now would be an opportune time to sign up.
