San Francisco TE Vernon Davis is finally back where he belongs- with his team at training camp. After reportedly holding out to renegotiate his contract, therefore missing the mandatory mini-camp and receiving multiple fines from the 49ers, he ultimately reported to training camp on time. Davis has been preaching his "what's best for my brand" propaganda all summer, but now it seems that what's best for his brand is playing for an NFL team. Maybe he's not too thrilled with the results of his low-budget action flick turn as Captain Torpedo.
At the end of the day, you've got to think long-term. Davis didn't really benefit from sitting out while he's got many years of productivity left in pro ball. His best move financially, and in terms of his reputation, is to play ball now, and save the business networking for when his knees go.
At any rate, it seems like Davis knows what the score is. He changed his tune at the last minute. Now the red and gold is his number one priority, even if it's because it's what's best for him (via SF Gate):
"It was a very easy decision. All you had to do was think about the team. That's what I did. I thought about my teammates... Guys who I love and would die for. There's nothing like being here. There's nothing like it. It's such a blessing.
"Anytime that I'm away from these guys, I'm hurting. I'm hurting. And it really hurt me to be away from this group because we have such a special group."
It's probably not all just lip service. Just a few days ago he was gushing about catching up with former Maryland alumnus Torrey Smith during San Francisco's joint practices with the Ravens (via Baltimore Sun):
"It's great catching up with Torrey, especially since he's a Maryland alum. It's great to see those guys, especially since he's a Terp. It's amazing just being here and getting a chance to get better."
