After becoming just the third golfer in PGA history to win 4 major championships by age 25, he may be seen as a threat to living legend Tiger Woods. While off the course distractions, age and injury have slowed down Wood's progress toward breaking Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 majors wins, McIlroy is just entering his prime. At the level McIlroy is playing, not only is he setting his own pace to challenge the Golden Bear, he may be simultaneously be threatening Tiger's dominant run. This summer has seen Rory McIlroy on quite the hot streak, and if you ask him, it all started right about the time he dumped his super cute fiancée Caroline Wozniacki. At least that's what it sounds like what he's saying.
Right now, Tiger Woods may be his own biggest road block. He has to get back into competitive shape, both in his body and mind.
But that doesn't mean he doesn't have a huge hurdle in terms of competition (via ESPN):
"Who knows if Tiger will even win a 15th major when you think he's got to beat the likes of Rory McIlroy and people like that. It will be unbelievable if he can win a 15th major. I personally think it will be the greatest achievement in his career."
Meanwhile, Irish sensation McIlroy has the hot hand, with two major championship victories in a row.
Coincidentally (or not), his shift in momentum occurred not long after splitting with his fiancée, Danish tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki (via TMZ):
"I think what happened has been for the better in terms of my golf... I've put a bit more time into it and it has refocused me. I mean, what else do I have to do now? I go to the golf course, I go to the gym and it's just my life at the minute."
That may sound pretty harsh. It may also be very true.
