Tony Stewart Racecar Death Investigation After Killing Kevin Ward Jr, NASCAR Driver Runs Over 20-Year Old On Dirt Track?

After the tragic death of Kevin Ward, Jr. during a Dirt Track Race on Saturday, NASCAR driver Tony Stewart pulled out of yesterday's race at Watkins Glen. Tony Stewart apparently killed the young racecar driver after hitting him with his car. Ward exited his vehicle after being spun out by Stewart, and by some accounts angrily walked toward Stewart and was run over. The 20 year old driver was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital. The matter is under investigation, and police are trying to establish whether Stewart is criminally responsible for Ward's death.

While there is some footage of the incident taken by fans in the stands, area police were hoping to obtain footage from the drivers' cars, but say there isn't any. Which seems pretty suspicious (via TMZ):

"It's odd because we're told -- by multiple sources in the racing world -- Stewart commonly has a mini-camera of some sort mounted on his cars when he races on smaller dirt tracks like Canandaigua. We've made multiple calls to Stewart's racing teams, but have not heard back."

Though Stewart was originally supposed to race yesterday as planned, he eventually pulled out of the Sprint Cup race in Watkins Glen.

Of course the family of the deceased is suffering from the tragic loss, but they did address the media concerning the situation (via Washington Post):

"We appreciate the prayers and support we are receiving from the community, but we need time to grieve and wrap our heads around all of this."

As tragic as it may be, one must wonder what Ward attempted to accomplish by walking out on the track full of moving racecars.

While there are many opinions on the level of culpability of Stewart, there is currently no ruling as police are still investigating the matter.
