It must be tragic to feel shorted by recording software in this day and age. At least for Laura Mvula, whose debut album Sing to the Moon took the 2013 British awards season by surprise and reached the Top 10 charts in the U.K. After a live performance with the Dutch Metropole Orchestra, the album that didn't deliver has now been revised and re-recorded--giving the space needed for Mvula's voice to soar over a cinematic orchestra.
With a release date slated for August 11, the good people at FADER debuted her orchestrated sophomore track 'Make Me Lovely' as it evokes something Disney-ish, all the while fueling that big band jazz vocal the likes of Ella Fitzgerald.
Apropos of the much deserved remastering of her work, Mvula's voice really encapsulates a sense of something old and unhindered. And another thing I noted, picked up, too, by the Guardian, is the amount of space that is filled in her "Make Me Lovely" track.
It's a wonderful take of sonic freedom that was otherwise filled to a breaking point, where all that was needed was the delicacy and depth of Mvula's voice. Nothing else.
Without further ado, make your way to FADER to listen to stream "Make Me Lovely," and check out this vid at the FADER Fort below.
