American Soccer star Tim Howard just signed a TV deal with NBC to do commentary for the Barclays Premiere League. Don't worry, he won't be leaving his post with the Everton Football Club. The side gig will accommodate his duties as the world's favorite goaltender, and he's only calling 10 matches this year. The World Cup's "U.S. Secretary of Defense" will aim to provide in-depth analysis of the psychological aspect of the game from a player's perspective as well as play-by-play.
Howard is such a perfectionist, even though he has an understanding of the sport, he freely admits that he has a long way to go before having that same level of expertise in the booth (via USA Today):
"'As a player, you know the game,' said Howard, in a conference call. 'When you get to a level that I'm at, the Premier League and the national team, you've almost in a sense mastered the game. But applying that in the broadcast booth... I'm nowhere near perfect, and to get to the top level, that's what you need to be.'"
Though Howard won't be a stranger to calling matches, he says it still makes him nervous (via SF Gate):
"On the surface, it seems so easy. Then you get in the booth and your knees start to tremble and you're not really sure why. It is very, very difficult. It takes such skill. As a player, you know the game. But to apply that and do it in the right way is very, very hard. I'm certainly nowhere near perfect yet."
Howard signed a multi-year deal, so he's got plenty of time to perfect his craft as an announcer. He may be glad he did once the time comes for him to retire!
