Natalie Weiss and Andrew Hodge turn into a Katy Perry original firework in new viral video, “The Most Literal Audition Ever.” Poking fun at the glory and unnecessary dramatized feats that are an acting audition, Weiss and Hodge perform a series of potential calls including stranding on spaghetti, or slowly falling, for an unimpressed table of casting directors, Melanie Brook, Grace Wall, Anthony Apicella and reader Micheal Lorz, to the tune of Eric Shorey’s piano rendition of “Firework” by Kate Perry.
Opening with Weiss crouched down in the left corner singing the opening lines of “Firework,” the video takes you through a little under four minutes of Weiss and Hodge (horribly) singing the most annonyingly creative way to audition for a part. Spinning tables, sewing a hat and some frog voiced show tunes are abundant in this breakdown of what it doesn’t take to make it big. To wit, in one segment Weiss will only sing when called upon, presumably so the judges can hear her Whitney Huston “I will Always Love you” ringtone.
While Hodge is better known for touring in A Chorus Line and White Christmas Weiss her stint with the Les Miserables 25th anniversary tour, she is perhaps more known by her YouTube fame from her web series, "Breaking Down The Riffs.”
With over a handful of episodes, Weiss takes to the talent at her fingertips and sits down a fellow Les Mis cast member at a time to teach them what it means to riff, vocally. Lessons are taught by Weiss from a series of Billboard hits, like episode 1 in which cast member Briana Carlson-Goodman tests her vocal chords to Beyonce’s “Halo.” Or episode 4, which features the adorable youngn’ Marcus D’Angelo, trying to belt out to the tune of Boyz II Men’s “Water Runs Dry.”
