Outspoken University Of South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier Thoughts On Alabama, Clemson

Dog bites man, right? Everyone knows that Steve Spurrier, head coach of the University Of South Carolina Gamecocks, is one of the most outspoken curmudgeons that college football has ever seen. But when he's not spouting his thoughts about intra-state rivals Clemson University, he's usually dropping some truth bombs about how powerful the SEC is. He made no bones a few weeks ago about the perennial greatness of conference mate Alabama, in typical dry fashion that led his on-air counterparts to question whether he was giving them a genuine or a back-handed compliment.

Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is so famous for speaking his mind, they write about him in Louisiana during the offseason (via NOLA.com):

"I don't care if they have to wheel him on to the sideline when he's 90 years old and he can barely see to spike his visor. It wouldn't bother me if he has to turn up the volume on his hearing aid to hear his quarterback explain why he threw an interception.

"Because Spurrier at 90 will be like Spurrier at 70, at 50, at 30 and probably at 10."

In other words, he was a grumpy old man before he even became old. Perhaps that's why even when he pays someone a compliment, people suspiciously raise their eyebrows and ask him what he means, like when he recently gave props to Alabama coach Nick Saban (via ESPN):

"'They've done extremely well, there's no question about that,' South Carolina's coach said of Alabama. 'I think they've had five No. 1 recruiting classes out of the last six years, which has got to make [Saban] the greatest recruiter in the history of college football.'"

Of course when it comes to long-standing rival Clemson, he never can quite keep his mouth shut.
