Aaron Hernandez Murder Trial: Former Teammate David Nelson Surprised By Accusations After Belichick Text Messages Revealed

The ongoing Aaron Hernandez trial goes on and on, but former teammate David Nelson is still surprised by the accusations of murder of his associate Odin Lloyd. That said, he did notice some alarming things when he played with Hernandez at the University of Florida. One person who claims not to know Hernandez very well is his former coach, the New England Patriots' Bill Belichick. There was apparently some confusion last week about the level of interaction between Hernandez and Belichick. While the prosecution claimed to have produced 34 pages of text messages between the two, a lawyer for the Patriots' organization revealed that only 33 total texts were exchanged.

David Nelson, a former college football teammate of Hernandez, seems to think that even though he had observed certain troubling tendencies in the past, that Aaron must have been running with a bad crowd, and that he is extremely impressionable (via CBS Sports):

"I was in Haiti when I got the call (about Hernandez) -- somebody from Sports Illustratedcalled me in Haiti and said 'I want to talk to you about Aaron Hernandez,'" Nelson continued. "... They told me the situation and it really shocked me. Because this is a guy I saw get into a fight in practice and crying 15 minutes later because he had just hurt his teammate.

"So this was a guy who was extremely sensitive, he was extremely vulnerable, but the thing is, he was who he hung out with. So if he was hanging out with somebody he was very influenced."

One person who apparently did not have a huge influence on Hernandez was Patriots coach Bill Belichick. According to phone records provided by Pats' lawyer Andrew Phelan they weren't best buddies (via Boston Herald):

"'I thought it was important to clarify that during an early investigation conducted by state prosecutors, the team produced a total of 34 text messages - not pages of texts - spanning a period of five months,' Phelan wrote in a statement the team put out."
