San Francisco's Aldon Smith has been sentenced to 12 days of jail time after pleading no-contest to three weapons charges and a DUI. These are just a handful of criminal charges that Aldon has racked up during his tenure in the NFL. He is still waiting to hear from commissioner Roger Goodell about the probable suspension resulting from the charges, but there hasn't been any word yet. Gee, it must suck to be the guy that makes quarterback Colin Kaepernick look like Russell Wilson.
The specific charges Smith was sentenced for were originally assigned felony status, but they were reduced. However, those aren't the whole of Smith's legal woes, so the scales don't necessarily tip in his favor (via NBC Sports):
"The recent reduction of the weapons charges from felonies to misdemeanors could help Smith's cause before the Commissioner, but Smith has had enough incidents and situations during his three NFL seasons that anything other than a multi-game suspension would be a surprise."
At least he has light jail time for this beef. He doesn't even have to do real jail time in a cell. He only has to spend the night (via TMZ):
"The judge has allowed him to do his work crew service on Mondays beginning on July 28th. He'll have to complete 11 days ...since he already has credit for the 1 day he previously spent in jail.
"In addition to the jail time, Smith was also placed on 3 years probation -- meaning he'd better not do anything stupid like yell 'bomb' in an airport or the judge could throw his ass in the slammer for a lot longer than 12 days."
Since he already did yell "bomb" in an airport, though, as well as a whole bunch of other stupid crap, he should definitely expect to be suspended for part of this season.
