‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Andy Samberg Talks Fired ‘SNL’ Cast: Judd Apatow Compares Brooks Wheelan To ‘Iron Man’ Robert Downey Jr [SEASON 40]

Recently, Saturday Night Live started trimming the fat from it’s cast for the upcoming 40th season of the sketch comedy series. Brooks Wheelan was the first to be let go, announcing his departure via Twitter. Judd Apatow reached out to Wheelan, comparing him to Iron Man Robert Downey Jr, who was also axed from the series. Now SNL vet, Lonely Island rapper and Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg has offered up a few kind words for everyone who was fired from the show.

Brooks Wheelan was the first casualty of the SNL casting cuts, announcing his departure with a mixture of grace and humor via Twitter:

"Had a blast and loved every second of it. I'm totally honored to be able to make this next joke... FIRED FROM NEW YORK IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!"

SNL Vet and Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg had a few words of encouragement for the fired cast members, addressing them via a statement to The Television Critics Association.

“If you were hired … there’s something good going on with you.”

Brooks Wheelan also got a word of encouragement from famed comedy producer/director/writer Judd Apatow, who tweeted him saying:

“.@brookswheelan you will have the Robert Downey Jr. post SNL career! (minus the painful drug addiction). Rock on friend!”

Brooks Wheelan took the compliment graciously, adding:

“.@JuddApatow thanks man! I'm gonna take this time to formally submit myself for the Ironman reboot in 2021 and the Chaplin reboot in 2032.”

Noel Wells and John Milhiser were also cut from the cast shortly after Wheelan announced that he was let go.
