Bollywood Director Vishal Bhardwaj releases a trailer for Haider a Hindi version of Hamlet he is producing as a Shakespearean conversation piece on the controversial 1990’s Kasmirian insurgency.
Completing a trio of Shakey’s work, including Macbeth and Othello, Bhardwaj confronts the realities of the Kashmiri conflict in this raw and violently graphic screenplay including scenes of torture in Indian army camps.
"Shakespeare is the most dramatic writer for hundreds of years. His stories of conflicts are relevant today and relevant everywhere," said Bhardwaj on why he chose a Shakespearean outlet for the insurgency.
He continues on with why it was important to showcase the Kashmiri conflict, “What happened in Kashmir is a very human tragedy, but no one is talking about it. But once you talk of it, you are released from it. What I am saying is the truth. It should be like a balm on a wound.”
The adaptation, written by Kashmir born Basharat Peer switches Hamlet, or Haider’s role from a Denmark prince to a Kashmir philosophy student. Clutch Hamlet scenes are present including Haider ‘s emotional "to be or not to be" while pointing a handgun to his head, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and even Haider's mom getting it on with his uncle.
With a Bollywood star-studded cast, including Shraddha Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, and Tabu, Haider is set to open October 2, However, the film still needs to pass India's government censors. Below, then, is the UTV Motion Pictures official trailer.
