In a historic decision, King Charles III has chosen Errollyn Wallen CBE to serve as the Master of the King's Music during his reign.

Taking over from Dame Judith Weir DBE, who Queen Elizabeth II initially appointed in July 2014, Wallen now steps into this role with a fresh perspective and innovative vision.

Wallen is a talented artist with British nationality, excelling as a composer, pianist, and singer-songwriter.

Tasked with creating music for royal celebrations, she was called upon to create compositions in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's milestone Jubilees. One of her noteworthy pieces, "Photography" (2006), composed explicitly for string orchestra, resonated through the halls of St Giles' Cathedral in July 2023 during the Service of Thanksgiving for King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The Honors of Scotland Ensemble delivered a breathtaking performance of her work on that memorable occasion.

In a statement, Wallen said, via Sky News, "I am thrilled to accept this royal appointment. It will be a privilege and a great honor to serve His Majesty The King, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth."

"I look forward to championing music and music-making for all."

Known for her exceptional compositions, the composer from Belize has gained acclaim for her contributions to the 2012 Paralympics and the recent COP26 environmental summit held in Glasgow in 2021.

Wallen made history as the inaugural female recipient of an Ivor Novello Award in classical music, having pursued music and composition studies at Goldsmiths, King's College London, and King's College, Cambridge. Additionally, she became the first black woman to showcase her work at the Proms event.

In recognition of her contributions to the music industry, she received the title of MBE from the Prince of Wales in 2007, followed by a CBE from Princess Anne in 2021.

Appointed by the Sovereign, BBC reported that the role of the Master of the King's Music is an esteemed title bestowed upon a distinguished musician recognized for enriching the musical culture of the United Kingdom and its affiliated nations.

It was first established during the reign of King Charles I and served as head of the Sovereign's band of musicians, as reported by the UK Express.

In 1899, a new era started as the Sovereign ended the tradition of a private band after the Queen created a separate band. Throughout the reign of King George V, the role of the Master has evolved without specific responsibilities. The Master now has the freedom to compose music for significant Royal events like weddings, jubilees, and coronations, if desired.
