'Drive East Festival Returns to La MaMa for Second Stellar Year of Traditional Indian Dance and Music
The Drive East Festival at La MaMa, curated by Sahasra Sambamoorthi and Sridhar Shanmugam, came back for a second year. Bringing over 26 artists to the Lower East Side over the span of seven days, the festival still stands to garner awareness of traditional Indian performing arts: Bharata Natyam, Odissi, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam and Kathakali. The event also featured trad Indian musical tastings using the flute, sitar and table. -
'Memphis Jookin or Detroit Jittin: Urban Dance Craze Alive in Motor City, Onlookers Recount Dance Duels
Dance movements of any particular urban sect seem to vary depending on the city and state (sometimes, even the borough). I wouldn't be surprised if at some point the "Showtime!" dancers on the MTA coined their own style of dance (perhaps "Subway Slinging," as they sling themselves from the railings).
