LaRose Washington’s 'Within A Shadow' Gets Theatrical Adaptation at The Den Theatre

Lex The Movie, in collaboration with Red Theater, presents the upcoming theatrical production Within A Shadow.

BroadwayWorld has reported that the script, written by LaRose Washington and recognized by Austin Film Festival, ScreenCraft, and Stage 32, is set to premiere at The Den Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, from September 5 until October 13, 2024.

Aside from writing, Washington has a background in performing in professional stage and film productions in cities including Los Angeles and Chicago.


A Journey of Culture and Identity

Cultural Exploration and Identity Themes Telling a tale deeply rooted in culture, Within A Shadow follows the journey of a Black university senior as she explores unreciprocated love, strong friendships, and clashes of tradition within the predominantly White campus she calls home.

The production combines high-contrast lighting methods, intricate choreography, and witty humor, aiming to provide audiences with a gripping and reflective journey that seeks to leave a lasting impression.

According to production details, a mix of established Jeff Award recipients and rising stars will come together to create a dynamic cast and crew.


Washington said in her Instagram announcement, "@withinashadow is about a quirky Black college senior who juggles awkward crushes, fierce friendships, and cultural clashes at her predominantly white university, all while fighting a battle of self-worth and cultural identity."

She added, "I can't express how excited I am, and how honored I am to have the amazing team I do! I promise you don't want to miss this!"

Ensemble Cast and Crew

The ensemble includes LaRose Washington, Theresa Liebhart, SaniaFaith, Lydia Moss, Matt Chester, Tanner Sabol, Will Colley, Jeffrey David Thomas, Margo Harper, and Jeanne Scurek. Understudies include Tierra Matthews, Sophie Civetta, Garrett Wiegel, Clarence Young, and Shakira Reedus.

Clare Brennan, Co-Artistic Director at Red Theater, stated, "LaRose is a valued member of Red Theater's artistic community, and we are so excited to help bring her moving, hilarious play to life."

The show is scheduled to feature evening performances from Thursday to Saturday at 8:00 PM, along with Sunday matinee shows at 3:00 PM.
