The Saints are off to a rocky start this year, but quarterback Drew Brees and his team may have saved their season from disaster after beating Tampa Bay on Sunday. Brees may be struggling, and maybe he threw 3 interceptions, but the Saints persevered to win against the Buccaneers in overtime 37-31.
If you ask Brees who the MVP of the game was, he'd probably tell you it was running back Pierre Thomas, whose 112 yards and two touchdowns were instrumental in keeping the game within reach (via ESPN):
"... Everything you'd want in a teammate in regards to not only his production on game day but throughout the week. He can do it all. He's one of the best all-purpose backs in the league, no question, and he's been that for a long time."
That's well and good, but in the NFL, conventional wisdom says you're only as good as your quarterback. And this year, Brees has had a big weight on his shoulders. Ironically, that means his team needs him to perform now more than ever (via SB Nation):
"There's a lot wrong with the Saints right now, but when Brees isn't playing well, they have no way to cover up their other faults."
